Temporomandibular Disorder/Dysfunction (TMD/TMJ):
Jaw pain and dysfunction arising either from trauma or chronic issues such as grinding and clenching known as bruxism.
Symptoms can include: headaches, neck and shoulder pain, ringing in the ears and ear pain, sinus area pain without infection,
restricted mouth opening and closing, teeth pain without evidence of cavity or infection, face pain, and poor sleep. The biggest
contributors are: trauma, Benign Systemic Hypermobility Disorder (see separate heading), unmanaged stress, forward head posture,
mal-adaptive habits of the jaw, airway restriction apnea, and poor bite alignment. Knowledge about and intervention of this
multi-faceted syndrome will usually have an overall positive effect on your entire quality of life.
Treatment of TMD is comprehensive and if warranted, co-treatment with other specialists can be included for rehabilitation goals of pain free, and a return to fullest function of the mouth and jaw.
